Starting in September, Spotify plans to roll out a new initiative aimed at identifying and limiting the presence of AI-generated artists on its platform. These AI-created entities will be marked with an “AI persona” label, which will be visible on both artist profiles and track listings. This effort is designed to help users differentiate between music created by real human artists and that produced by artificial identities, and to safeguard genuine musicians from being overshadowed by AI-generated content.
One of the key changes Spotify is implementing involves excluding AI personas from personalized recommendations by default. This reflects the company’s commitment to transparency and to providing a clearer distinction for listeners who are curious about whether an artist is a human or an AI creation. In addition, while artists will have the option to declare if their identities are AI-generated, Spotify will also employ human reviewers and AI-powered tools to detect any AI personas that have not been disclosed.
The decision to introduce these measures comes as the volume of AI-generated music on the platform continues to expand at a rapid pace. In the past year, Spotify revealed that it had removed 75 million spam tracks, underscoring the extent of artificial and substandard content infiltrating music services. By implementing these changes, Spotify aims to manage the influx of AI-generated music more effectively, ensuring that legitimate artists maintain their visibility and reach.
As generative AI becomes increasingly prevalent in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes the growing importance of transparency. Listeners are showing a heightened interest in understanding the nature of the artists behind the tracks they enjoy. By labeling AI-generated artists and managing their presence on the platform, Spotify is taking steps to address these evolving listener preferences and to protect the interests of authentic musicians.
