Kazakhstan-China to Launch Cross-Border QR Payment System by 2026’s End.

Kazakhstan is set to introduce cross-border QR-code payment systems with China by the close of 2026, enabling travelers from both nations to easily conduct mobile transactions. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Kazakhstan’s National Bank, which is also planning to launch similar payment services with 11 other countries, including India, the United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, with additional systems anticipated to be operational by mid-2027.

The collaboration with China is poised to extend the yuan’s utility beyond its current roles in trade and investment, integrating it into everyday consumer spending. This move underscores the deepening financial ties between China and Central Asian countries, facilitated by the Belt and Road Initiative. By leveraging existing payment frameworks, Kazakhstan and China are building upon their previous cooperation. In 2024, a partnership between Kazakhstan’s Kaspi.kz and China’s Alipay enabled Kaspi users to make mobile payments while in China.

China has been actively promoting the global usage of its currency, the yuan, as part of its strategy to enhance cross-border payment systems and lessen reliance on the US dollar. This aligns with Beijing’s broader agenda of expanding digital yuan initiatives and QR-based payment mechanisms, further cementing its role in international finance.

The Kazakhstan-China payment system initiative is likely to bolster regional financial integration and may lead to increased adoption of yuan-based payment systems throughout Central Asia. This development reflects a strategic move towards enhancing financial cooperation and connectivity in the region.
