The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has seen a marked escalation as Ukraine launched a major drone offensive against Russia, targeting strategic locations across the country. This operation, involving over 1,000 drones, is said to be the largest of its kind directed at Moscow, according to the city’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin.
The overnight assault focused on vital infrastructure, specifically oil and logistics facilities that bolster Russia’s wartime capabilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the strikes employed both drones and domestically produced weaponry. As a result, significant damage occurred at the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building, while the wider Moscow region reported two fatalities and 20 injuries.
Moscow’s defenses were put to the test as approximately 450 drones were intercepted. Mayor Sobyanin accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt Russia’s parliamentary elections, which were underway at the time. These elections extended into Ukrainian territories that Russia occupies and claims, a move that Kyiv has denounced as illegal.
Russia’s Defense Ministry expanded on the scope of the attack, claiming a total of 1,110 Ukrainian drones were destroyed across Russia, Crimea, and the Black Sea region. This incident underscores the intensifying use of long-range drone tactics by both nations, targeting infrastructure and military installations far from traditional battlefields.
The timing of the strikes, coinciding with the conclusion of Russia’s parliamentary elections, has further heightened tensions. The use of drones highlights a strategic shift in the conflict, focusing on economic and logistical targets that could impact Russia’s military operations and political processes.
