A recent gathering in Ljubljana served as a platform for in-depth discussions on national legislation, capacity-building initiatives, and other pressing issues related to chemical safety and international collaboration. This two-day event featured 18 delegates from OPCW National Authorities across Eastern Europe, who convened to address the practical challenges and share best practices in implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, aiming to bolster regional cooperation.

The programme was comprehensive, featuring presentations from various countries, an update on the OPCW’s ongoing activities, and discussions on contemporary issues and obstacles. A significant portion of the dialogue centered on the influence of artificial intelligence and the pivotal role of academia in ensuring chemical safety and countering the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

Slovenia, a proactive participant with the OPCW, adheres steadfastly to the Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans the development, production, accumulation, and deployment of chemical weapons, mandating their destruction under international oversight. With 193 States Parties, the Convention is recognized as one of the most successful and broadly ratified treaties. The Slovenian Chemicals Office oversees its national implementation, monitoring industrial operations involving strategic chemicals and working alongside the OPCW in executing international inspections.

On May 12, Slovenia ascended to a position on the OPCW Executive Council, the governing body tasked with enforcing adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention. Throughout its two-year tenure, Slovenia aims to thwart the proliferation of chemical weapons and enhance global trust and security. During the OPCW Regional Meeting’s inauguration in Ljubljana, Boštjan Peršin from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs highlighted that advancing new technologies and promoting peaceful and secure chemical use would be among Slovenia’s top priorities on the Executive Council.

By partnering with the OPCW and co-hosting the Regional Meeting, Slovenia has shown its dedication to maintaining the highest standards of chemical safety and transparency, as well as the responsible application of chemicals for non-aggressive purposes.
